Chico State women’s basketball hopes to take first step towards tournament win and automatic NCAA Championship Tournament berth

The Chico State women's basketball team knows full well that in postseason play, you need to keep winning to stay alive. The Wildcats, which last week secured a California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Tournament berth for the fourth time in the last five seasons, begin their march towards a tournament title and an automatic spot in the NCAA Championship Tournament Thursday afternoon when it takes on Cal State Dominguez Hills at Lumberjack Arena in Arcata. Tipoff is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.

Tickets are available through the official CCAA website. Fans planning to attend are asked to be familiar with and follow Cal Poly Humboldt's campus event policy.

Fans can follow the action with Mike Wessels calling the play-by-play locally on KPAY Sports 1290-AM, with the broadcast simulcast online. Live Stats will also be available, as well as live streaming video through the CCAA Network. For $9.95 per month, fans can access every Chico State game—home and away—along with all live and archived CCAA matchups.

Links to streaming video, audio and Live Stats are available at www.chicowildcats.com in the calendar section on the homepage and on the women's basketball schedule pages.

The top six conference teams will compete in the CCAA Tournament through Saturday, with the winner not only claiming the CCAA Championship banner, but also earning one of the eight bids to the March 11–14 NCAA West Regional and the chance to play for the Division II national championship.

The winner of Thursday's Chico State-Dominguez Hills game will advance to Friday's 2:30 p.m. CCAA Tournament semifinal game against the No. 1 seed, Cal State San Marcos.

Chico State enters the CCAA Tournament after going 13-10 during the regular season and 10-8 in conference play. The Wildcats punched their ticket to the postseason last Thursday at Acker Gym with a thrilling 65-64 win over Dominguez Hills. After dropping the season finale to Cal State East Bay Saturday, the 'Cats were installed as the No. 5 seed in the conference tournament.

Thursday's game vs. Dominguez Hills marked the only time the Wildcats and Toros played each other during the 2021–22 campaign. The scheduled January 8 game in Carson was canceled due to COVID-19 protocol.

Chico State is averaging 67.5 points a game, which ranks fourth among the 12 CCAA teams. Defensively, the Wildcats were seventh in the conference, giving up 64.4 points a contest. The Wildcats led the CCAA with 198 3-pointers and ranked second in free throw percentage (74.1 percent).

Cal State Dominguez grabbed the No. 4 CCAA Tournament seed thanks to an 11-8 conference record; overall, the Toros, winners of three of their last four games, finished the regular season 13-11.

Dominguez Hills ranked second in the CCAA in scoring, averaging 69.6 points a game, while on the defensive end the Toros were fifth in the conference, surrendering 62. 5 points per contest. Dominguez Hills ranked third among CCAA teams in rebounding (42.0 a game) and free throw percentage (71.0 percent).

The last time the two teams met in postseason play, Chico State defeated Dominguez Hills 90-70 in the first round of the 2013–14 NCAA Championship Tournament West Regional. Thursday's game will be the fourth time the Wildcats and Toros have met in the CCAA Tournament, with Dominguez Hills winning two of the previous three meetings. The 'Cats hold a 42-19 edge over the Toros in the all-time series.

During our short time back together in 2021–22, Chico State's student-athletes are already back to blowing us away on every front. They've generated video companions aimed at encouraging all fellow Wildcats as part of their Scratch the Stigma initiative, re-launching with an enhanced version in March. They've earned six postseason berths, highlighted by CCAA and West Regional Men's Cross Country championships and the men's basketball team's highest-ever national and regional rankings. And they've exceled in the classroom, combining for 27 perfect 4.0 GPAs, while 217—more than two-thirds of them—earned GPAs of 3.0 or higher.
