In the short span of 34 career games, Chico State women's basketball standout Makenzi Laporte has established herself as a ferocious rebounder, a consistent scorer, and a tenacious defender. During the Wildcats' recent two-game road trip, the Salinas native displayed another part of her game—knocking down 3-point shots—that will keep opposing defenses honest for some time to come. Laporte's solid all-around play and prowess from behind the arc against Cal Poly Humboldt and Sonoma State makes her the latest Wildcat of the Week.
Laporte averaged 11 points a game against the Lumberjacks and Seawolves, shooting 53.8 percent (7-for-13) from the field. She was even deadlier from 3-point range, draining five treys in seven attempts while collecting a combined 10 rebounds, two steals, and two assists to help the Wildcats split the tough road series to move to 6-4 on the season and 3-2 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA).
Thursday against Cal Poly Humboldt, Laporte scored nine points and grabbed seven rebounds, hitting a pair of 3-pointers as the Wildcats topped the 'Jacks 75-63. Against Sonoma State on Saturday, Laporte tallied 13 points and was 3-for-4 from downtown as the 'Cats lost a 70-69 heartbreaker to the Seawolves.
So far this season, Laporte is averaging 7.3 points and 4.4 rebounds a game, and leads the Wildcats in 3-point shooting percentage (47.6 percent).
Laporte and the Wildcats play their final game before adjourning for the holiday break Sunday, when they host Pacific Union College Sunday in a non-conference contest at Acker Gym. Tipoff is set for 1 p.m.
