’Cats’ postseason push must begin this weekend

Chico State hosts Cal Poly Pomona and Humboldt State at Acker Gym

With four games remaining, the Chico State women's basketball team still has a legitimate shot at earning a California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Championship Tournament bid. But the Wildcats know full well that to reach the postseason, they'll have to put together a very strong finish. The 'Cats are faced with two big tests this weekend, as they host Cal Poly Pomona Friday and Humboldt State Saturday at Acker Gym. Both games are scheduled to tip off at 5:30 p.m.

Besides the postseason implications, Friday's game against Pomona will be broadcast live on ESPN3, giving the contest – and the sure-to-be-packed Acker Gym – an extra air of excitement. To watch the game on ESPN3, click HERE.

Fans can follow the action of both Chico State games locally on Newstalk 1290-AM KPAY, with Mike Baca and Mike Wessel's play-by-play simulcast on the Internet through the Wildcat Athletics website. Live Stats and live streaming video will also be available online. Friday's audio broadcast will begin at 5:05 p.m. on www.kpaysports.com; the radio and Wildcat Athletics online broadcast will join the game in progress at 6:10 p.m.

Despite sitting in 10th place in the conference standings and losing three of their last four, the 'Cats (10-12 overall, 5-11 in CCAA play) come into the weekend just a game out of the eighth and final conference tournament berth. The 'Cats dropped two on the road last weekend, falling to UC San Diego 68-47 and Cal State San Bernardino 68-57.

Chico State is banking on continuing its success at home. The Wildcats are 7-3 at Acker Gym in 2015-16, averaging 64.4 points a game on offense while surrendering just 53.5 points a contest. By contrast, the 'Cats have averaged only 60.6 points on offense while giving up 65.6 points a night in their 12 road games this season.

The Wildcats have even more incentive to post "W's" this weekend. Chico State will be looking to avenge losses to both Pomona and Humboldt State from earlier this season. The Broncos beat the Wildcats 65-58 on Jan. 9 at Kellogg Gym in Pomona, while Humboldt State handed Chico State a 77-71 setback Jan. 7 at Lumberjack Arena.

Cal Poly Pomona, the Wildcats' Friday night opponent, is also in the thick of the CCAA Championship Tournament hunt. With three games remaining, the Broncos (9-15 overall, 7-10 CCAA) currently reside in seventh place in the conference standings. Pomona enters play Friday having lost three of its last five and coming off a home split last weekend against Cal State Monterey Bay and Cal State East Bay.

Cal Poly Pomona has dropped seven of 11 decisions on the road this season.

The Broncos have had the upper hand in recent years, winning the last four meetings with the Wildcats heading into Friday. Pomona has also enjoyed success at Acker Gym, taking four of the last six games played on Chico State's home floor. The Broncos lead the all-time series between the two teams 25-23.

Humboldt State, which comes to Acker Gym Saturday following its Friday matchup in Turlock against Stanislaus State, is 12-12 overall and tied for fifth place in the CCAA with a 9-8 conference record.

The Lumberjacks, coached by former Chico State great Joddie (Vossler) Gleason, has won four of their last five games entering the weekend, including a 15-point victory over Cal State Monterey Bay (57-42) last Saturday.

Humboldt State is 5-7 on the road this season.

The Lumberjacks lean heavily on the long ball, and is one of the top 3-point shooting teams in the conference. Sophomore guard Kiana Brown ranks second among all CCAA players with 55 treys on the season.

Humboldt State has beaten the Wildcats in each of their last four meetings, but Chico State owns a healthy 67-24 lead in the all-time series.

Saturday will also be Senior Night at Acker Gym, with the Wildcats' lone senior Brooke Bowen receiving a special spotlight prior to tipoff.
