’Cats collide with Cougars Saturday in CCAA clash

Chico State returns to Acker Gym looking to snap three-game losing streak

There's certainly something to be said for the comfort a team enjoys when playing on its home court. Case in point: the Chico State women's basketball team. The Wildcats are 2-0 so far this season in the friendly confines of Acker Gym and 66-29 at home since Brian Fogel took over as Head Coach in 2008. The 'Cats hopes to continue that productive trend Saturday when they host their newest conference opponent, Cal State San Marcos. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.

Fans unable to attend the game in person can follow the action online via the Wildcat Athletics website. Mike Baca and Mike Wessels will be courtside to provide the play-by-play, with the broadcast also airing locally on Newstalk 1290-AM KPAY. Live Stats and live streaming video will also be available online.

Chico State, 4-3 on the season and 0-2 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), is anxious to get back in the win column. After starting the 2015-16 campaign with four consecutive wins, the Wildcats have dropped three straight, including Tuesday's 66-64 road loss to Fresno Pacific. The 'Cats' last win was back on Nov. 22, and they're still in pursuit of their first CCAA victory.

The 'Cats have been scuffling on offense during the losing streak, averaging only 52 points a game while shooting just 35.4 percent from the field and 29.4 percent from 3-point range. Chico State remains the top defensive team in the CCAA, allowing an average of just 54.6 points a game.

In its first season of NCAA Division II play, Cal State San Marcos is 2-4 overall and 1-2 in the CCAA. After notching the program's first conference victory last Saturday against Sonoma State, the Cougars fell 50-39 in a non-CCAA contest Wednesday against Point Loma Nazarene.

San Marcos averages only 55 points a game on offense, but is fourth among the 13 CCAA teams in defense, allowing just 60.2 points a contest. The Cougars are led by sophomore guard/forward Savannah Camp, who ranks third in the CCAA in scoring (16.7 points a game) while pacing San Marcos in rebounds (6.2 boards a contest) and 3-pointers (14).
