Await word on NCAA Championship Tournament fate

Box Score ONTARIO – There are only so many ways to describe what happened to the Chico State women's basketball team in its 64-52 loss to Cal State Dominguez Hills in the California Collegiate Athletic Association Championship Tournament Friday night. Head Coach Brian Fogel came up with two:

"The tempo changed and we didn't adjust. We got away from doing what we did to get the lead," said Fogel. "We were the aggressor. Then they became the aggressor and we got on our heels."

Chico State women's basketball player McKenzie Dalthorp
Chico State was cruising right along, leading 41-26 with 14:11 left. Annie Ward was knocking down shots and the Wildcats were winning the battle of the boards.

Suddenly everything changed.

"We started to play great defense and then the shots started fall for us," said the Toros' Monay Lee.

Cal State Dominguez Hills went on a 12-0 run. The Wildcats stemmed the tide momentarily with a couple of Courtney Hamilton free throws consecutive buckets from Jazmine Miller to build the lead back to 47-40 with 9:05 to play.

The response didn't last, however. Chico State's next point came on an Annie Ward free throw with 2:38 left. The Toros had scored 18 points in the meantime and led 58-50.

The Wildcats fell to 18-9 and now await word on their NCAA Championship Tournament fate. The field will be announced Sunday night at 7:30 p.m. Chico State fans are invited to enjoy the festivities at Mom's Restaurant beginning at 6 p.m.

Ward finished with a team-high 17 points and Miller had 13. McKenzie Dalthorp finished with 10 points and eight rebounds.

Cal State Dominguez Hills improved to 19-9 and will face Cal Poly Pomona for the Championship Tournament title Saturday night at 7:35.
