Chico State win streak ends as Lumberjacks humble Wildcats 74-43

ARCATA, Calif. – Too many 3-pointers and too much Brittney Taylor…Chico State couldn’t overcome 10 Humboldt State treys and a career-high 27 points by the Lumberjacks Jr. center as the Wildcats saw their four-game winning streak go by the boards in a 74-43 loss Saturday at Lumberjack Arena in Arcata.

As was the case Friday in their win over Sonoma State, the ’Cats were slow out of the blocks in the first half against the Lumberjacks, but this time Chico State would not be able to recover. The Wildcats hit just five of 22 shots from the field and committed 15 turnovers in the first 20 minutes, allowing Humboldt to grab control of the contest from the outset. The Lumberjacks jumped out to a 10-2 lead, but thanks to six early points by Renee Goldoff, the ‘Cats stayed close and trimmed Humboldt’s lead to 19-13 with 4:15 to play in the half. The Lumberjacks then caught fire, going on an 18-2 run highlighted by four 3-point buckets, and Humboldt State built a commanding 37-15 halftime lead.

Chico State came out firing to start the second half, with Natasha Smith, Christine Vest and Annelise Miller all hitting layups in the first two minutes to pull to within 18. But that was as close as the Wildcats would get the rest of the night, as Taylor scored six points to spearhead a 14-0 Humboldt State run to up the Lumberjacks lead to 53-21. Goldoff continued to shoulder most of the offensive load for the ’Cats, scoring nine points over the next five minutes, but with 8:45 to go and Humboldt up 58-33, the Lumberjacks put the game away with an 14-2 run punctuated by another six points by Taylor…Humboldt going on to the 74-43 victory and handing Chico State its most lopsided loss of the season.

Goldoff was the Wildcats high scorer with 15 points; she also pulled down 11 rebounds on the night. Smith had eight points for the ’Cats, while Vest chipped in with six as Chico State slipped to 13-10 overall and 9-7 in the CCAA. Chico State was 0-for-10 from 3-point range; it was just the second time this season (and first since December 21) that the ’Cats had failed to hit a 3-pointer in a game. In addition to her 27 points, Taylor had eight rebounds to lead the Lumberjacks, who with Saturday’s win improved to 17-6 on the season and 12-4 in conference play.

The Wildcats will be back in action next Friday as they travel to southern California to take on the Golden Eagles of Cal State L.A. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m. Mike Baca will provide the play-by-play live on ESPN 101.7 FM in Chico; you can also hear the action on the Internet via the Wildcats Athletics website.
