Women's basketball team drops heartbreaker

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - All five Chico State starters scored in double-figures. The Wildcats even led by 10 points early in the second half. Still, host Cal State San Bernardino found a way to spoil the Wildcats' night as Samantha Oelsner's 3-pointer at the buzzer rimmed out and the Coyotes held on for a 68-67 win.

Renee Goldoff finished with 13 points, Cory Edwards finished with 12 points and nine rebounds, Natasha Smith chipped in 12 points and five assists, and Melissa Richardson and Christine Vest added 10 points apiece. That wasn't quite enough to keep the Wildcats from falling to 5-6 overall and 1-3 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), however.

Morgan Pryor had 18 points and Krystal Urzua finished with 17 points and 10 rebounds to lead Cal State San Bernardino, which improved to 4-0 in the CCAA and 6-4 overall.

Melissa Richa
Richardson's 3-pointer and Edwards' three-point play to start the second half gave the Wildcats a commanding 45-35 advantage. But Chico State's offense went silent over the next five minutes and the Coyotes chipped away at the lead until Pryor's 3-pointer tied the game with just over 13 minutes to play.

Layups by Goldoff and Jasmin Thomas put the lead back into the Wildcats' hands for the next few minutes until Jaclyn Rainville's second 3-pointer in as many minutes tied the game at 57-all with 6:22 to play. Vest momentarily gave Chico State back the lead with an inside bucket, but Pryor's 3-pointer with 4:33 remaining gave the hosts their first lead since the first half, 61-59.

Vest answered with another inside bucket to tie the game, but Pryor was relentless. Her jumper, followed by an Urzua basket, made it 65-61 with just under two minutes to play.

Goldoff breathed life into the Wildcats with a three-point play that cut the defecit to one, but Pryor's 3-pointer with 44 seconds to play stretched San Bernardino's lead to 68-64. Richardson buried a 3-pointer to again pull Chico State to within one. The Wildcats had a chance to take the lead after San Bernardino's Lisa Takata missed the front end of a one-and-one, but turned it over when Smith was called for a carry with 11 seconds left.

They had one last chance when Shannon Gholar missed two straight free throws with nine seconds left, but a long 3-pointer by Oelsner was the best shot the Wildcats could muster and it did not fall.

Chico State is back in action Friday night at home against Humboldt State. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
