Foul trouble dooms Wildcats in Pomona

POMONA, Calif. - Renee Goldoff fouled out and Christine Vest and Cory Edwards battled foul trouble all night. That, coupled with a hot-shooting Cal Poly Pomona offense, was too much for the Chico State women's basketball team to overcome in a 65-61 loss to the Broncos Friday night. The Wildcats dipped to 5-5 overall and 1-2 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) with the loss.

Natasha Smith finished with 19 points, four rebounds, four assists, and three steals to lead the Wildcats, who continue their Southern California road swing with a game at Cal State San Bernardino tonight at 5:30. Vest chipped in 15 points on 5-of-7 shooting but was limited to just 25 minutes of action due to foul trouble. Goldoff finished with six points, seven rebounds, and three steals.

Chico State led 42-38 when Vest was whistled for her fourth foul with 11:55 to play. It was 45-42 when Goldoff collected her fourth foul less than two minutes later. Cal Poly took advantage of their absence with a 6-0 run and would never trail again.

The Wildcats hung tough and tied the game at 54-apiece when Goldoff scored down low. She fouled out soon after, however, and the team managed just one field goal over the game's final four minutes.
