Wildcats' unbeaten string against Monterey Bay comes to an end

SEASIDE, Calif. - The Chico State women's basketball team had never lost to Cal State Monterey Bay. Unfortunately for the Wildcats, all good things must come to an end. The team's long-standing dominance over the Otters ended Friday with a 50-46 loss in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) opener for both teams in the brand new Otter Sports Complex.

Cold shooting and foul trouble proved to be Chico State's undoing. The Wildcats shot just 29 percent from the floor, and the team's reserves couldn't provide a spark, combining to shoot just 2-for-16. Meanwhile, the Wildcats were whistled for 23 fouls and Monterey Bay was called for only nine fouls. Chico State starter Cory Edwards fouled out midway through the second half and four other Wildcats were in serious foul trouble for much of the night,

Chico State fell to 2-2 overall and 0-1 in the CCAA with the loss, while Cal State Monterey Bay improved to 5-1 on the season and 1-0 in the CCAA under first-year Head Coach Renee Jiminez. The Otters were just 3-24 last season.

Christine Vest led the Wildcats with 10 points, eight rebounds, two assists, and two blocks while also chipping in a pair of steals. Melissa Richardson and Natasha Smith scored nine points apiece, while Smith nabbed four steals and Richardson pulled down seven rebounds.

Renee Goldoff scored eight points and grabbed five rebounds, two assists, and two steals despite playing only 23 minutes due to foul trouble. The fourth-year senior's five rebounds were enough to propel her past Janice Banks (1975-78) into ninth on the University's career rebounding top-10 list. Goldoff's current career total is 496.
