Collins scores 17 against Cal

BERKELEY, Calif. - Sophomore guard Molly Collins erupted for 15 points in the final nine minutes of the second half and scored a game-high 17 in the Chico State women's basketball team's 95-51 loss at the University of California Wednesday. The game was the second and final one of Chico State's exhibition season, both of which were against teams ranked among the NCAA Division I preseason Top-10. They opened the exhibition season at No. 2 Stanford, while Cal opened the season ranked No. 9.

Collins, who sustained a season-ending knee injury just eight games into her true freshman, scored only 14 points all of last year. She bested that in a nine-minute span during the first half Wednesday, helping Chico State stay within striking distance of the host Bears throughout the first half. They went to intermission down 47-30.

Collins entered the contest with 8:19 to play in the first half and Chico State in danger of letting the game get completely out of hand, down 31-13. After the Bears stretched the lead to 37-15, Collins buried a trio of 3-pointers and two other jump shots during a 15-10 run that trimmed the lead to 47-30 at the half.

The Golden Bears slowly pulled away in the second half, but the Wildcats left Berkeley feeling good. Renee Goldoff finished with 11 points and seven rebounds. True freshman Synchro Bull dished out a game-high four assists. Sam Oelsner scored five points, and sophomore Ashley Washington pulled down four rebounds.

Chico State opens the regular season at home on Nov. 20 against Alaska Fairbanks at 7 p.m. They then host the Carls' Junior Coslet Classic Nov. 21-22.
