The Chico State women’s basketball team has featured several players over the years that have gotten the job done offensively. But since 2018, whenever the Wildcats are in need of points, more often than not their go-to scorer has been shooting guard Myli Martinez. The Fairfield native is currently in the middle of an outstanding senior season, and on New Year’s Day delivered arguably her finest performance yet, tallying a career-high 19 points in the ’Cats’ 64-62 victory over Stanislaus State. Her huge contribution to the Chico State win makes Martinez the latest Wildcat of the Week.
Martinez connected for four 3-pointers against the Warriors, was 5-for-6 from the foul line (including a free throw with 15 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter to ice the game), and dished out two assists as the Wildcats hung on to beat Stanislaus State and improve to 8-4 on the season while moving into sole possession of fourth place in the CCAA standings with a 4-2 conference mark.
Martinez currently leads the Wildcats with 21 3-pointers on the season, and ranks third on the team in scoring with an average of 9.7 points a game. She is also second in assists (22) and tied for third in steals (7).
Martinez is knocking on the door for inclusion in the Chico State record books. Her four 3-pointers against Stanislaus State now gives Martinez 120 treys for her Wildcat career.
Martinez and the Wildcats are home this week for a pair of important conference contests, taking on undefeated Cal State Dominguez Hills Thursday and Cal State East Bay on Saturday.
