Prior to last weekend's Kim Duyst Invitational, it had been 10 month since Allysa Ashburn last participated in the long jump. Now a senior, the Yuba City High School product wasted little time serving notice that she plans to be among the elite competitors in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA)—and perhaps all of Division II—in the event. Ashburn's convincing win in the long jump during the first full meet of the 2020 season makes her the latest Wildcat of the Week.
Ashburn's winning leap of 5.54 meters —the top long jump mark in the conference so far this season, and fourth in the nation—represented a personal best in the event, topping her previous mark of 5.48 meters set at last year's CCAA Track & Field Championships in La Jolla.
Ashburn was also terrific on the track Saturday in Turlock. Together with fellow Wildcats Isabella Moyer, Savannah Bailey, and Lara Condosta, Ashburn was part of the 4x100-meter relay team that finished second with a time of 48.16 seconds, just a half second shy of the fastest time posted by a Chico State relay team in all of 2019.
Ashburn and the Wildcats are home at University Track Stadium this weekend to compete in the annual Chico Invitational. The hammer throw competition will take place Friday and all other events, including the long jump at 11 a.m. and 4x100-meter relay at 1:40 are scheduled to take place on Saturday.
