When Giovanni Larrea joined the Wildcats last fall, Chico State men’s track & field head coach Oliver Hanf could hardly contain his excitement. Hanf had a hunch that the transfer from Diablo Valley College would accomplish some big things during the 2023 season, and based on his multi-event performance during the Chico Invitational, the Antioch product is certainly living up to expectations. Larrea enjoyed an exceptional Saturday at University Stadium, with his efforts—including a pair of personal bests—earning Wildcat of the Week honors.

Â
Larrea wrapped up a successful day by teaming with fellow Wildcats Calvin Igbanoi, Demetre Coffey, and Ty Thomson to finish fourth in the 4x400-meter relay, stopping the clock at 3:29.92.
Â
Larrea and the Chico State men’s track & field team return to action May 4–6, as the Wildcats look to reclaim the conference crown at the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Track & Field Championships in San Marcos.
