In a career that has spawned many memorable moments, Maddy Wong may have used her final regular season home games to provide her most noteworthy achievements as a member of the Chico State women's basketball team. The senior guard helped lead the Wildcats to a pair of big California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) victories, and in the process thrilled the Acker Gym faithful by setting new Chico State single-season and CCAA career 3-point shooting records. Wong's history-making heroics make her the latest Wildcat of the Week.
In the two games against San Francisco State and Sonoma State, Wong averaged 16 points, hitting 11 of her 19 field goal attempts (.579 shooting percentage) and going 8-for-11 (.727) from beyond the 3-point arc. She also added seven rebounds, six assists and two steals as Chico State improved to 16-10 overall and 12-8 in conference play, clinching a berth in the upcoming CCAA Tournament.
Thursday against San Francisco State, Wong scored nine points and grabbed four rebounds in just 18 minutes of action in the Wildcats' 84-55 drubbing of the Gators. But she saved her best for Saturday's Senior Night—after being honored in pregame ceremonies, Wong went out and knocked down seven 3-pointers and posted a season-high 23 points as the Wildcats downed Sonoma State 67-61. Her sixth trey of the night broke the CCAA career 3-point record of 218 set by Cal State LA's Kelli Kobayashi; her final 3-pointer was her 81st of the 2019–20 campaign, setting a new Chico State single-season record.
Back on February 1, Wong became Chico State's all-time 3-point shooter, and now has 220 treys in her four-year Wildcat career.
Wong and the Wildcats wrap up the regular season this week with a pair of road contests. The 'Cats take on Humboldt State Thursday in Arcata before traveling to Turlock Saturday to face Stanislaus State. Both games tip off at 5:30 p.m.
