ALISO VIEJO, Calif. – Basketball season is right on the horizon, and that can mean one thing: predictions.
As a tradition, the CCAA announced its women's basketball preseason poll Thursday and Chico State is shown respect, garnering 109 points, including one first-place vote, to finish fourth in the prediction.
The polling is made up of the 12 head coaches around the league.
The voting saw three teams finish within seven points. Cal State LA took the top spot with 131 points and five first-place votes, Cal Poly Pomona had 128 points and four first-place votes and Cal State Dominguez Hills took third with 124 points and a pair of first-place votes.
Behind Chico State are Sonoma State with 87 points, Cal State San Bernardino (83), Cal State East Bay (68), defending champions Cal State San Marcos (51), Cal Poly Humboldt (49), Stanislaus State (42) and both Cal State Monterey Bay and San Francisco State are tied with 32 points.
Despite losing three starters from last year's team that finished second in the standings, head coach Brian Fogel returns two key starters in All-CCAA second teamers Jordan Allred and Makezni Laporte. Allred averaged 12.1 points per game last year, and Laporte, while having averaged 10.6 points, was the top rebounder on the team, grabbing around 5.6 boards per game.
Also returning from last year's letterwinners are Meadow Aragon, Ashleigh Barr, Jadence Clifton, Jiana Creswell and Kaila Woo. Fogel stocked up with four transfers and one freshman for the 2024-25 team. Coming to the Wildcats are Deonna Mayfield from the City College of San Francisco, Ciarah Michalik from Cal State Monterey Bay, Madison Parry from Cal Poly Humboldt, Kaylie Edge from Sacramento State and freshman Kamil Reid out of Carondelet High School in Antioch.
Chico State opens the season in the Central Valley, participating in the CCAA/PacWest Showdown at Fresno Pacific. The Wildcats take on the host Sunbirds on November 8 and then Dominican the next day.
