A rough day in the City by the Bay

Chico State falls twice to the Gators to complete makeup series; now heads home to host No. 23 CSUSB

SAN FRANCISCO – The Chico State baseball team couldn't find an answer to San Francisco State's all-round performance as the Gators took the makeup doubleheader, 9-4 and 3-2, Wednesday to complete the four-game California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) series sweep.

Chico State falls to 15-18 overall and 9-14 in the CCAA. The Wildcats, who have lost nine straight conference games, drop to eighth in the CCAA standings. Based on conference win percentage, Chico State (.391) currently trails Cal State East Bay, which holds a .481 percentage, for the sixth and final spot to the CCAA Championship.

Only 16 games remain in the regular season, starting Friday with No. 23 Cal State San Bernardino at Nettleton Stadium. First pitch is at 5 p.m.

Game 1 – SFSU 9, CHICO 4
After a solo shot by SF State's Gavin Haimovitz in the second inning gave the Gators the lead, it was short lived. Xabi Iparraguirre led off the third with a single to right center and eventually scored on an Andrew Crane RBI groundout.

SF State reclaimed the lead in the third inning, but Chico State answered again in the fourth. With two down, Kyle Dobson reached base on a crucial passed ball that should have ended the inning. Instead, the catching mistake allowed the 'Cats to plate three unearned runs using four straight singles by Iparraguirre, Jarret Lindsay, Jeffrey Ray and Crane to give them a 4-3 lead.

That lead was short lived as well as the Gators tied the game with another solo home run in the fourth inning and four runs in the fifth. A two-run home run in the eighth inning boosted the Gators lead to 9-4.

Game 2 – SFSU 3, CHICO 2
The Wildcats had work to do after the Gators scored two unearned runs to open the runs column in the scorebook. Chico State got one of those runs back in the fourth. Jeremy Keller drew a one out single to left center, took second on a wild pitch, and scored on Ernie Arambula's base hit to left.

The difference in the game was in the fifth inning, when Haimovitz's second solo home run on the day put the Gators ahead 3-1.

Chico State's seventh-inning rally attempt began with back-to-back one-out doubles by Jacob Jablonski and Cameron Mahaffy. SF State halted the threat with a strikeout and a flyout.
