A patient approach and ability to pounce on pitches in the strike zone continued to serve the Chico State baseball team well on Saturday, the second day of the 2022 season. The 25
th-ranked Wildcats swept Saint Martin's by scores of 24-4 and 8-1 in moving to 3-0. They've now outscored the Saints—members of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference—by a combined 45-5 in the first three games of the series, which concludes with a single game Sunday at 11 a.m.
Jack Murphy, Andrew Crane and Willie Lajoie all homered in the first game of the day. Elija Jackson, Jarret Lindsay, and Crane drove in four runs apiece. Murphy and Crane went back-to-back during an 11-run fifth. The Wildcats scored four in the first, second, and third innings to grab control of the game. Kevin Lyons (1-0) earned the win in relief.
Chico State produced another big inning—an 8-run second—to win the nightcap. Grady Morgan's three-run double was the big blow in the frame. Murphy's two-run single capped the scoring in the frame.
The highlight of the nightcap was the pitching of Chico State starter Cody Gentry. The sophomore from Concord collected 10 strikeouts, allowing just one run on three hits in five frames of work.
Just as they did in Friday's opener, the Wildcats showed great discipline at the plate. They drew 10 walks in the first game and five more in the second. They were also hit by pitches four times in each game.
