We’re talking baseball!

Wildcats picked to finish 2nd by CCAA coaches; Set to play for the first time in 23 months on February 4

Sure, preseason polls are a guessing game that don't mean anything once the games start getting played. Sure, they are even more of a guessing game when games haven't been played in nearly two years. But it sure feels good to be talking baseball again. The Chico State baseball team is picked to finish second in the California Collegiate Athletic Association in 2022, according to a poll conducted by the conference's coaches.

The Wildcats, ranked 25th in the nation, will begin their season on their home turf at Nettleton Stadium on February 4 at 2 p.m. It's the first of a four-game series against Saint Martin's and will mark the first time the Wildcats have played since March 8, 2020.

Chico State received two first-place votes and 106 points in the poll. Teams picked to finish first received 10 points, those picked to finish second nine, and so on. Cal Poly Pomona, picked to win the conference, collected six first-place votes and 116 points in all. Cal State Monterey (2) and Cal State LA (1) also received first-place nods.

Fans attending Chico State baseball games this season are expected to follow all campus health and safety guidelines: symptom check and mask when indoors or when outdoors and physical distancing cannot be achieved. Spectators will be prohibited from all team areas. The Wildcats' games will be broadcast live locally on AM-1290 KPAY and available online.

Fans can also follow on the Internet via live stats. Live video broadcasts of the games are available for purchase on the CCAA Network. Links to streaming video, audio and live stats are available at www.chicowildcats.com in the calendar section of the website's homepage, and on the baseball schedule page.

Chico State returns just seven players from that 2020 team—Willie Lajoie, Andrew Renteria, Grady Morgan, Austin McFarlane, Braeden Gowdy, Tyler Chivens, and Josh Verdon—which was 15-7 prior to the season being shut down in response to COVID-19.

What roles will those seven play this season? How will the 30 newcomers to the roster respond to their new environment? It's a guessing game. But it's sure nice to be guessing about baseball.
