SANTA ROSA—The Chico State women's golf team went into Monday's first round of the Sonoma State Fall Invitational looking to finish the fall portion of its 2021–22 schedule on a positive note. The Wildcats are still well within reach of that goal, but they'll have some work to do in Tuesday's final round to realize it. The 'Cats shot a collective 41-over par 329 on the opening 18 at the Valley of the Moon Club in Santa Rosa, leaving Chico State in 11th place at the tournament's midway point.
Fresh off a top 30 finish at last week's RJGA Shootout at Estrella, Taylor Stewart owned the hot hand for the Wildcats Monday, knocking down four birdies on the way to posting an opening round 78 to earn a share of 16th place on the individual leader board.
Kelsey Blaylock, seeking her second straight top 10 tournament finish, got off to a good start at the Sonoma State Fall Invitational Monday, playing at 1-over par through her first five holes. Blaylock finished with a pair of birdies on the day and an opening round 81, good for a share of 35th place overall.
Trinity Hernandez scored back-to-back birdies and collected three on the day, finishing with a first round score of 82. The freshman lefty is among four golfers tied for 42nd place in the 80-player field.
Natalie Kinney owns a share of 65th place following an opening round 88. Kelly More is tied for 70th with a first round 89.
Of the 14 schools competing, Cal State San Marcos holds a two-shot lead on the team leader board midway through the Sonoma State Fall Invitational, thanks to a combined score of 18-over par 306. Menlo College finished Monday's opening 18 in second place at 20-over 308, with Sonoma State (22-over 310) and Western Washington (312) in third and fourth place, respectively. Academy of Art, Holy Names, and Cal State East Bay are all tied for fifth at 28-over 316.
Academy of Art's Anahi Servin turned in the top individual performance Monday, shooting a 1-under par 71 and holding a two-shot lead going into the tournament's final round.
