Just like its student-athletes, Chico State's Department of Athletics is continually seeking to evolve and improve. The launch of the 'CatsSkills program, created to elevate the student-athlete experience at Chico State, is the latest effort to do so.
"Developing and implementing a dedicated student-athlete success program has been a dream and goal of mine for many years," said Chico State Director of Athletics Anita Barker. "The 'CatsSkills program is a dream coming to fruition and a testament to our commitment to providing a transformative student-athlete experience to our Wildcats."
The purpose of 'CatsSkills is to foster the complete student-athlete through four core initiatives: leadership development; personal development; professional development; and community engagement. All programming is optional and designed to align with Chico State's strategic priorities and enduring commitments, along with the core initiatives of the NCAA, CCAA and Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. It is also meant to be nimble enough to adjust to current issues and events.
Student-athlete input will play a vital role in building the curriculum, which is designed specifically for them. Instruction will be provided by department staff, campus partners, alumni and occasionally outside experts. Programming will be delivered virtually until on-campus activities are permitted.
Former track and field student-athlete and 2019–20 CCAA Impact Award winner Nadia Torkman is overseeing the program. Torkman exceled as an intern for Compliance Coordinator Shannon Hall last year, evolving into a valuable member of the whole department. Her decision to return as a graduate student, along with the suspension of athletics activity due to COVID-19, sped up the launch.
"This is a unique time and we need to continue striving to give our student-athletes an exceptional experience while normal athletic activity is paused," said Barker. "Nadia's unique blend of experiences and passion for student success provides us with exactly what we need to get this exciting program off the ground."
The agenda officially kicks off Friday with a presentation by Chico State Men's Basketball Coach Greg Clink. The three-time CCAA Coach of the Year will be sharing his views about team culture. Student-athletes should check their inbox for details.
The long-term hope is to grow 'CatsSkills into class-specific programming that will result in a leadership certificate for the student-athletes who choose to participate throughout their time in the program.
