KC and the seniors shine at Stanford

Arroyo clears automatic standard while four others post provisionals

True freshman sprinter Kristofer Castillo is just getting started. Senior high jumper Tyler Arroyo and senior thrower Joseph Ilaoa are committed to finishing their collegiate careers with a flourish. All three made big moves Friday, providing the biggest highlights in a day full of them for the Chico State track and field team at the Stanford Invitational and Mike Fanelli Track Classic.

Castillo clocked the fastest 100-meter time by a Wildcat (10.55 seconds) since Terence West set the school record with a time of 10.50 in 1988, in his eighth-place finish in the Stanford Invitational 100-meter final Friday in Stanford. That time, which ranks second in school history, is also an NCAA Championships provisional qualifying mark. Entering this weekend's action, only six Division II student-athletes had run faster than Castillo did on Friday. Castillo won his heat in a time of 10.69 to advance to the final. He was the lone Division II athlete to make the final.

Arroyo matched his personal-record—which also ranks second in school history—set a new season-best mark, and most importantly, secured his spot at the NCAA Championships for the second straight season on a dramatic day at the high jump pit at Stanford. Arroyo was down to his final attempt at 2.11 meters before getting over the bar, and again cleared 2.14 meters (matching his season-best mark) on his final attempt.

That set up a showdown with the bar at 2.17 meters, which would match his personal-best and provide an NCAA Championships auto mark.
Chico State Track and Field Athlete Jospeh Illaoa
Joseph Ilaoa's hammer throw of 55.30 meters
Friday ranks sixth in school history.

No drama necessary. Arroyo cleared that height (7-feet and 1.5 inches) on his first attempt, becoming the first athlete in Division II to do so this season. He missed on all three cracks at the school record of 2.20 meters and settled for second place behind Tennessee two-time All-American Darryl Sullivan.

Ilaoa launched the hammer 55.30 meters to finish fourth at Stanford, beating his personal record by more than a meter, moving up to sixth on Chico State's all-time best list, and cracking the NCAA Championship provisional list. He finished fourth overall in the 12-man field that including 11 from the Division-I ranks.

Isaiah Roybal and Hasani Barrett also bagged big marks at Stanford. Competing in the invite-only portion of the long jump, Roybal lengthened his NCAA provisional mark to 7.31 meters in finishing second to Tennessee triple-jump All-American Jalen Tate. Barrett won his heat in the 400 meters in a personal-record time of 49.59.

The Chico State distance crew notched 10 personal records at the Mike Fanelli Track Classic at Chabot College in Hayward, led by Eddie Kings provisional mark in the 10,000 meters late Thursday night. King finished 33rd out of 109 competitors and second among Division II competitors with a time of 30:14.34. No Division II athlete had run faster heading into the weekend.

Jason Intravaia also PR'd in the race, finishing in 30:48.93.

Late Friday night in the 5,000 meters, all seven Wildcats PR'd. Wyatt Baxter led the way with a time of 14:33.52. He was followed by freshman Trad Berti (14:40.08), Remington Breeze (14:41.47), Teddy Kassa (14:49.35), Luis Ortega (14:50.11), Jack Emanuel (15:02.39), and Christian Woolfolk (15:08.20).

Matthew Herrera led the way for the Wildcats in the 1,500 meters, finishing 33rd in a time of 3:54.83.
