A futbol family that serves together, stays together

Chico State soccer alums create a Wondo-ful fundraiser for the Butte County soccer community impacted by the Camp Fire

The players and coaches that make up the Chico State soccer program have always considered themselves a family, coming together for annual events and staying in close contact. This weekend, they will join forces to do much more than strengthen bonds. They are joining forces to help strengthen Butte County, and specifically, its soccer community following the devastation wrought by the Camp Fire.

The Camp Fire Soccer Community Relief fund, spearheaded by Chico State soccer alumni Robby Busick and his brother, Chad, has announced the Chris Wondolowski Soccer Camp. The camp and surrounding events, which will take place this Thursday through Saturday at Pleasant Valley High School in Chico, are designed to provide all boys and girls of Butte County's youth soccer community—and their coaches—an opportunity to play the game they love and learn from some truly great soccer players and minds.

The camp is free of charge to youth and coaches directly impacted by the Camp Fire. The $50 fee for all other youth and coaches will be donated to those directly impacted through the North Valley Community Foundation.

To sign up, fill out the registration form available at www.chicowildcats.com and bring it to the event.

"We just want to give these kids a chance to come out and have some fun with some of their soccer heroes while encouraging their love for this beautiful game," said Robby Busick. "It is a way for us to play a small role in the healing of this wonderful community."

Chico State soccer alumni spanning at least five decades, including U.S. National Team member and Major League Soccer MVP and Golden Boot winner Wondolowski, former Columbus Crew and Sacramento Republic goalkeeper Dominik Jakubek, Chico State Athletics Hall of Fame Coach and former NCAA Division II Coach of the Year Mike O'Malley, current Chico State Head Coach Felipe Restrepo, and scores of other Wildcats will be on hand to offer their expertise.

Busick also noted that many young athletes lost their soccer gear in the fire but encourages them to come anyway.

"We are doing are best to make sure everyone will have the gear they need to participate," he said. "If you do need gear and are planning to attend, please email me (campfiresoccercamp@gmail.com) so we can have what you need all squared away."

Events during all three days will be held at Pleasant Valley High School.

Programming begins Thursday night with a coaching workshop provided by Chad Busick of Advance Sports Technology from 6-9 p.m. Open to coaches of all sports, the workshop will focus on the coaching side of mental training. The presentation will provide key fundamental elements designed to maximize the potential of every coach.

"Chad's message is really about helping coaches get the most out of themselves in order to help kids get the most out of their sport," said Robby Busick.

Friday from approximately 5:30-7:30 p.m., Chad Busick will present a workshop for coaches, parents, and athletes focusing on achieving the correct mindset to get the most out of athletic endeavors. That event will begin as soon as the Paradise-Pleasant Valley girls' soccer match, which begins at 4 p.m., is complete. A meet-and-greet with Wondolowski will follow the workshop.

Saturday's camp provides soccer players of all ages the opportunity to learn from Wondolowski, a U.S Men's National Team and San Jose Earthquakes forward. Wondolowski holds many Major League Soccer records, including goals for one club (140), road goals (67) and double-digit goals scored in consecutive seasons (nine). Wondolowski is also the leading active goal scorer in MLS with 144 tallies and is just one shy of tying the league's all-time record for goals scored (145, Landon Donovan). At the international level, Wondolowski has made 35 appearances for the U.S. Men's National Team, scoring 11 goals and providing three assists.

Saturday's schedule will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and feature various drills and activities.

Soccer Camp led by Chris Wondolowski, Robby Busick, and current and former Chico State Soccer Players and Coaches

Saturday, Dec. 15: 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

Quakes forward Chris Wondolowski, former Columbus Crew and Sacramento Republic goalkeeper Dominik Jakubek, and many other Chico State players and coaches spanning five decades up to the current day will lead soccer players of all ages in drills and activities.

Chris Wondolowski is a former Chico State Soccer player who helped lead the 2003 Wildcats to the 2003 NCAA Division II Championship match. He was drafted by the Houston Dynamo and eventually traded to the San Jose Earthquakes. Wondo, as he is known throughout the soccer world, was the 2012 MLS Most Valuable Player and has twice won the league's Golden Boot for most goals scored. After scoring 10 or more goals for the ninth consecutive season in 2018, Wondolowski will enter next season needing just two more to surpass Landon Donovan's MLS record 145. Wondolowski has also made 35 appearances with the U.S. Men's National Team.

Chad Busick, from Advance Sports Technology, will lend his expertise in the mental side of sports training. Advance Sports Technology has an impressive resume assisting many professional teams, Universities, and major club organizations. They work with athletes and coaches to embrace the mental aspects of competition in order to thrive and maximize potential in both players and coaches.

Dominik Jakubek, a First Team All-America goalkeeper on the Wildcats' 2003 NCAA finals team, is an ex-professional goalkeeper who played for the Columbus Crew of Major League Soccer, and most recently, the USL-champion Sacramento Republic. Jakubek made 31 starts for the Republic between 2014-17, posting 12 shutouts and a 0.88 goals-against average. Jakubek has recently formed the Dominator Goalkeeper Academy and works with aspiring youth to reach their full potential as a goalkeeper.

Robby Busick is another member of the 2003 Wildcats and currently lives in Chico with his wife, Jessica (another Chico State soccer alum). For lack of a better term, he's the ringleader of this operation. Busick runs a small business, the Truck-a-Roni Food Truck, and has been active in aiding those impacted by the Camp Fire since it began.
