Lewis and Wildcats hoping to spin another shutout Wednesday

Men’s soccer team hits the road for mid-week matchup

As one of the finest goalkeepers in the California Collegiate Athletic Association, Chico State's Damion Lewis is a study in contrast.

Away from the pitch, he expresses his laid-back and fun-loving nature as a DJ. With his Wildcat team, head soccer coach Felipe Restrepo describes Lewis as a leader the players "rally around," commanding with the same intense focus he adeptly balances with playfulness while coaching a local youth travel soccer team.

And after the criminal justice major graduates in spring 2019, he may pursue a professional soccer career. Or perhaps a job as a firefighter. For now, though, Lewis will continue to add to his status as one of the top net-minders in Chico State history.

"He's one of the best we've had here," Restrepo said. "He's a dominant player, and I think he has the best in front of him. He's just now coming into his own."

In front of Lewis and the Wildcats on Wednesday is a showdown with Stanislaus State under the lights in Turlock at 7 p.m. They'll wrap up their regular season road slate Sunday at San Francisco State before returning home the following weekend to put a bow on the regular season with matchups against Cal State San Marcos Thursday and UC San Diego Saturday.
Thursday's match is also Wildcat Food Pantry night and fans are encouraged to bring donations to support Chico State's food-insecure students. Saturday's match will be preceded by a celebration of the team's seniors.

WILDCATS NEWS
With just two weeks remaining on the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) schedule, Chico State is positioned nicely to make a push for the postseason tournament and possibly challenge for the CCAA title. One of the hottest teams on the West Coast, the Wildcats are 9-3-1 overall and 6-2-0 in the CCAA after winning three straight and seven of their last eight.

Fabian Roman recorded the match-winning goals in the Wildcats' wins
against Stanislaus State and San Francisco State last season.

The Wildcats are currently tied for third place in the CCAA with Cal State San Bernardino with 18 points, four points behind Cal State LA at the top of the table, and three behind second-place Cal Poly Pomona. Teams receive three points for each win and one for each tie.

The top two teams at the end of the regular season will receive a bye into the CCAA Tournament semifinals. The third and fourth-place teams will host a first-round CCAA Tournament match on Tuesday, Oct. 30. The fifth and sixth-place teams will travel for a first-round match.

San Francisco State currently sits fifth on the CCAA table with 17 points, but the Gators have just two matches remaining. UC San Diego is sixth with 14 points, and Cal State Monterey Bay and Cal State Dominguez Hills (12 points) are tied for seventh.

The Wildcats held steady at No. 6 in this week's United Soccer Coaches West Regional rankings. But those rankings are just for fun. The NCAA Tournament Committee will post its first regional rankings Wednesday. That committee will eventually select the three at-large teams that join the champions of the PacWest Conference, Great Northwest Athletic Conference, and CCAA Tournament in the 2018 NCAA Championship Tournament West Regional.

Scouting the Opponents
Stanislaus State (6-7-0, 2-6-0 CCAA)—The Warriors will send perhaps the CCAA's hottest offense to the pitch to face the Wildcats' stifling defense. Stanislaus State has scored 10 times during its current three-match win streak, and has reached doubled digits in goals in each of its last five contests.

Chico State, on the other hand, has shut out three straight opponents and allowed only three goals in its last eight matches.

The Wildcats won last year's match in Chico 2-0. Fabian Roman got the Wildcats on the board eight minutes in, and Lewis earned the shutout, making four saves.

Chico State leads the all-time series 51-15-3.

San Francisco State (8-3-3, 5-3-2 CCAA)—The Gators have had a Jekyll and Hyde season. They surely caught the attention of the conference's coaches with a scoreless draw against Cal State LA and 3-1 victory against UC San Diego. But the Gators have also had some head-scratching results along the way.

As a result, with only this weekend's matches against Stanislaus State and Chico State remaining on their schedule, they are desperate for points that would improve their positioning for a postseason berth.

The Gators have been very good defensively, allowing only seven goals all season. They rank third in the conference, just behind Chico State, in goals-against average.

The teams played a very entertaining match last season in Chico. Roman's match-winning goal in the 80th minute made the difference.

Chico State leads the all-time series 65-19-9.
