Wildcats rally, stretch unbeaten streak to 6

Gasmi, Hurlow goals give men’s soccer team 2-1 win

Box Score ARCATA – It hasn't been easy. The 5th-ranked Chico State men's soccer team's unbeaten record just makes it look that way. The Wildcats rallied for two second-half goals to beat Holy Names 2-1 Saturday evening in Arcata in the finale of the Lumberjack Classic, wrapping up the non-conference portion of their schedule 5-0-1.

Chico State allowed just its second goal of the season in the sixth minute. The score remained 1-0 until Joachim Gasmi converted a penalty kick in the 53rd minute. Matt Hurlow hit the game-winner 15 minutes later, set up by Akwafei Ajeakwa, giving the Wildcats their third consecutive one-goal win.

The Wildcats outshot Holy Names 16-6 and enjoyed an 8-4 edge in shots on goal. Freshman goalkeeper Luke Dennison made a trio of saves.

Hurlow and Ajeakwa were a handful for Holy Names, combining for nine shots, four of which were on goal.

The Wildcats open California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) action Friday at 7 p.m. at Cal State Dominguez Hills. They take on Cal State L.A. Sunday at 11:30 a.m. The home portion of their conference slate starts against Cal Poly Pomona Oct. 3 at 4:30 and UC San Diego Oct. 5 at 11:30 a.m.
