If there were such a thing as President of the Chico State Men's Soccer Alumni Association, Michael Janjigian would surely garner a lot of votes. Chico State's senior captain has captured the respect of his teammates through his leadership and love of the game. And he's had a lot of them, now nearing the end of his sixth season in the program.
Â
Janjigian redshirted in 2009 before embarking on a decorated career as one of the top defenders in NCAA Division II soccer. That quest hit a speed bump last season when he broke his foot. But he's come back with a vengeance in this, his final go-around.
Â
Michael JanjigianJanjigian and fellow seniors Akwafei Ajeakwa, Justin Saul, Joachim Gasmi and Malcolm Ekeruche will be honored prior to Sunday's 2 p.m. match against Cal State Monterey Bay.
Â
The Wildcats (6-6-2 overall and 1-6-1 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association) open the weekend with a 7 p.m. showdown Friday night against San Francisco State.
Â
Janjigian led the team in minutes played in each of his first three seasons on the pitch, and does so once again. He was named Second Team All-CCAA and Second Team All-West Region as a junior while earning National Soccer Coaches Association of America Scholar All-West Region First Team accolades. In 2011, Janjigian was an NSCAA Scholar All-West Region Honorable Mention.
Â
He helped lead the Wildcats to CCAA North Division titles in 2010, 2011 and 2012 and two NCAA Championship Tournament berths. In 2010 the Wildcats won the West Region title before advancing to the NCAA Championship Tournament quarterfinals.
Â
Ajeakwa is tied for the active lead among Wildcats with 11 career goals. Saul's the program's active career leader with six assists. Gasmi has scored four goals and has an assist in two seasons, and Ekeruche is a first-year senior fulfilling a dream to play top-notch collegiate soccer.
Â
There's much to support among the senior class, which will play its final three home matches at home, beginning Friday. They'll be honored Sunday. Thursday will mark their final home match in a Chico State uniform.
