Chico State finishes non-conference slate 2-0-0

Box Score SEATTLE – Justin Walmsley scored on a header in a crowded goalmouth Saturday, lifting the Chico State men's soccer team to a 1-0 win over Seattle Pacific in an NCAA men's soccer game at Interbay Stadium.

The loss spoiled the Falcons (0-1) season opener. They were undefeated in eightprevious season-starting contests.

Chico State men's soccer players Justin Walmsley, Luke Palmer, and Tyson Crim.
Chico State (2-0) completed a sweep on its Northwest road trip, including a 2-0 victory at Saint Martin's on Thursday in which Walmsley tallied an assist. It's been quite a first week for one of the newest Wildcats.

Chico State capitalized on a 33rd-minute free kick from the right side. Luis Martinez lofted a cross toward the far post and Walmsley rose above heavy traffic to direct it home at 32:15.

The Wildcats' defense was outstanding. Seattle Pacific managed only five shots and only two posed any real danger. Chaz Jenkins' header off a corner kick smashed off the crossbar in the opening half. Wildcats goalkeeper James Stroud wasn't asked to make a save until the 87th minute.

The Wildcats enjoyed a 14-5 edge in shots, and 5-1 edge in shots on goal.

That wraps up Chico State's abbreviated non-conference schedule. They Wildcats open California Collegiate Athletic Association play next weekend when they take on Cal State East Bay Friday at 4:30 p.m. and Cal State Stanislaus Sunday at 2 p.m.
