Box Score The Chico State men's soccer team tried just about everything to get through the Cal Poly Pomona defense Sunday. The Wildcats tried to string together passes, they tried to dribble around the Broncos, and they tried to attack straight up the gut. Finally, two minutes into overtime, they went over the top.
As it turns out, that was the Broncos' weak spot.
Octavio Guzman connected with J.P. Medina to start a counter attack and Medina looped a pass over the top of the defense to Matt Hurlow, who used his speed to gain separation and then cracked a low liner just inside the near post from 15 yards to give Chico State a 1-0 win Sunday afternoon at Nettleton Stadium.
Late-match heroics have become the sophomore's specialty. He won a match in much the same way in overtime last season at Sonoma State, and four of his six career goals are game winners.
The Wildcats, ranked 14th in the nation entering the weekend, improved to 5-1-0 with the win and moved into sole possession of first place in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) South Division at 3-1-0. Cal Poly Pomona fell to 3-2-1 overall and 1-2-1 in the CCAA.
Chico State will put first place on the line next weekend during a road trip to face Cal State L.A. Friday and Cal State Dominguez Hills Sunday.
James Stroud made a pair of saves for his third shutout in six starts.
