Men’s soccer falls for first time this season

Wildcats were victims of sensational goalkeeping

Box Score The Chico State men's soccer team absorbed its first loss of the season in its first home match of the season Friday night, falling to UC San Diego 1-0.

UC San Diego's Taylor Wirth slammed home a failed clearance attempt from the top of the box in the 28th minute for the game's lone goal. The ball skimmed the bottom of the crossbar, eluding the Wildcats' diving goalkeeper James Stroud.

Chico State, ranked No. 14 in the nation entering the weekend, outshot the Tritons 8-3, but goalkeeper Josh Cohen made a trio of brilliant saves to keep the Wildcats off the scoreboard.

Chico State fell to 4-1-0 overall and 2-1-0 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) South Division, whilc UC San Diego improved to 3-1-1 overall and 1-1-1 in the South Division.

The Wildcats started the day in a three-way tie for first in the South and actually finished there as well because Cal State San Bernardino and Cal State L.A. also lost.

Cal Poly Pomona visits University Soccer Stadium Sunday at 11:30 a.m. The Broncos, 3-1-1 overall and 1-1-1 in the CCAA, beat Cal State San Bernardino 1-0 Friday.
