Wildcats stretch unbeaten streak to 10

Box Score SAN BERNARDINO – Unless they're fishing on an off day, soccer defenders never want "tackle" and "box" in the same sentence.  But tackles in the box were the story of the day when Chico State and Cal State San Bernardino played Friday in San Bernardino.

Fortunately for the Wildcats, Octavio "Tavo" Guzman made good on two tries from the penalty spot in Chico State's 2-1 win, which also featured a Coyotes penalty kick.

Men's Soccer player Matt Hurlow
Matt Hurlow and Tyson Crim drew the penalties for Chico State, which stretched its unbeaten streak to 10 matches and remains in first place in the California Collegiate Athletic Association's South Division.

The Wildcats, ranked No. 2 in the West Region and No. 22 in the nation, improved to 13-2-2 overall and 11-2-2 in the CCAA. They wrap up the regular season at Cal State Monterey Bay Sunday at 11:30 a.m.

Hurlow entered the match in the 23rd minute and immediately made his presence felt. He attacked the box from the left side with the dribble and was brought down for the Wildcats' first penalty kick of the season in the 24th minute.

After the Coyotes got on the board with a penalty kick of their own in the 41st minute, lightening struck twice for the Wildcats. This time, Crim cut around a defender in the box near the end line and was tackled from behind in the 74th minute.

The Wildcats finished with a 15-8 edge in shots and 5-3 advantage in corner kicks. Sam Evans made a pair of saves in goal for his 36th career victory.
