Box Score POMONA – Following a 2-0 win at Cal Poly Pomona Friday night, the Chico State men's soccer team will head to La Jolla Sunday with first place in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) South Division on the line. And the Wildcats' offense seems to be picking up speed at just the right time.
Tyson Crim and Kramer Runager scored second-half goals for the Wildcats, who improved to 9-2-0 overall and 7-2-0 in the CCAA. It marked the third time in four matches that the Wildcats put a crooked number on the scoreboard and they've scored eight times in the last four matches.
They'll need a strong offensive outing against sixth-ranked UC San Diego, which leads Chico State by a single point in the South Division standings after notching its seventh consecutive shutout victory Friday night.
That streak started with a 1-0 win in Chico on Sept. 20. The Tritons have not allowed a goal in their last 673:59 on the pitch.
The Wildcats have been playing some solid defense as well. They notched their third straight shutout Friday, and they did so in impressive fashion. The Broncos didn't muster a single shot on goal and only seven shots in all.
Chico State got on the board in the 69th minute when Runager got a head on Octavio Guzman's free kick, sending it toward the right post where Crim waited to bang it home.
A chaotic series in the 85th minute culminated in Runager's first goal of the season. Following Luis Martinez's cross, Elliott Plummer and Joachim Gasmi each rifled shots that were blocked before Runager rifled a left-footed volley into the back of the net from 12 yards.
Sunday's match is scheduled to kick off at 2 p.m. and fans can follow the action via the livestats link at www.chicowildcats.com.
