The Chico State men's soccer team ended UC San Diego's three-match shutout streak Friday at University Soccer Stadium. And they did it in style. The Wildcats got gorgeous goals from Octavio Guzman and Chris Akwaja in a 2-1 win that lifted them into first place in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) North Division..
Chico State improved to 6-2-3 overall and 5-2-2 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) while extnding its unbeaten streak to four matches. Friday's win, coupled with Sonoma State's tie against visiting Cal State L.A., vaulted the Wildcats into first place in the North.
UC San Diego (6-5-0, 5-4-0 CCAA) saw its three match win streak come to an end.
Guzman's sixth goal of the season was set up by one of the WIldcats' 11 first-half corner kicks. One of Evan Johnston's corner kicks was punched out by UC San Diego goalkeeper Jesse Brennan. It landed at Cody Levar's feet and the redshirt freshman one-timed a pass to his left for Guzman.
The true freshman one-timed a knuckling shot toward the mouth of the goal. As Brennan was moving to his right in an attempt to make the save, one of his defenders stuck a foot out in an attempt to do the same. Instead, he just got a piece of the ball and it deflected back to Brennan's left well before the goalkeeper could recover.
UC San Diego equalized in lightening-quick fashion in the 60th minute. Cory Wolfrom slid a through ball into the box that Sam Ball one-timed. It was unclear whether Ball was attempting to cross or chip it toward the far corner, but it bounced off Wildcats midfielder Luke Palmer and snuck inside the near post to make it 1-1. The goal was Ball's second of the season.
Akwaja's game-winner took place just over five minutes later. The senior dribbled from near midfield, got around a defender, and then quickly cracked a shot from straight on before the next wave of defenders arrived. The ball bent beautifully away from the goalkeeper and nestled into the side netting, sending off a wild celebration on the Chico State bench.
Chico State's own three-match shutout streak came to an end via Ball's goal. But the Wildcats will try to start another such streak when they host Cal State San Bernardino Sunday at 11:30 AM.
