First place on line during rivalry weekend at University Soccer Stadium

No. 20 Wildcats host 23rd-ranked Sonoma State Sunday at 11:30

The early lead in the race for the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) North Division crown is on the line this weekend when the 20th-ranked Chico State men’s soccer team hosts long-time rivals Humboldt State and 23rd-ranked Sonoma State at University Soccer Stadium. The Wildcats, 5-1 overall, are 3-1 in the CCAA. Sonoma State boasts the same record, while Humboldt State is 1-3-2 overall and 1-2-1 in the CCAA.

On Friday night, Chico State will host Humboldt State while Sonoma State visits Cal State Stanislaus (third in the CCAA North Division). The Wildcats will battle Sonoma State Sunday morning at 11:30.

The Wildcats are 40-14-6 all time against the Lumberjacks, including 8-3-1 in the last dozen meetings. The teams split last season. Kyle Crain’s penalty kick in the second overtime lifted Chico State to a 1-0 victory in Arcata. The Lumberjacks got some revenge about six weeks later when the Wildcats fell 2-1 at home despite a 10-5 advantage in shots.

Chico State will be attempting to snap a 12-match winless streak against Sonoma State. The lone tie during that streak came last season in Rohnert Park when Luis Martinez scored the equalizer in the 52nd minute. On Oct. 23 in Chico, Sonoma State grabbed a 2-1 win thanks to Trevor Hurst’s game winner in the 88th minute. Sonoma State leads the all time series 29-21-3.
