McCarthy mows down Humboldt to earn Wildcats split

ARCATA – Chico State true freshman pitcher Kacie McCarthy is soaking it all in during her first collegiate season. Point in fact – she watched Humboldt State starter Gracie Perez fire a no-hitter in the Lumberjacks’ 4-0 victory in Sunday’s first game and then went out and twirled a complete-game two-hitter as the Wildcats won the nightcap 1-0. McCarthy allowed only leadoff singles in the fourth and sixth, walked three, and struck out five while improving to 5-6 on the season.

Sam Quadt drove in the winning run with a bases-loaded ground out in the sixth for the Wildcats, who moved to 10-8 overall and 7-7 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) with the split. Chico State was hitless through the fifth inning of that second game until Christine Johnson followed Jessie Minch’s leadoff walk with a bunt single. Charlotte Honciano singled through the left side, setting the stage for Quadt to deliver the go-ahead run.

The Wildcats have showed marked improvement under first-year Head Coach Angel Shamblin, earning their seventh conference victory Sunday, which is one more than they won all of last season. It took last year’s squad 31 games to win 10. This season, it has taken just 18.

Humboldt State is now 10-10 overall and 3-7 in the CCAA. Perez walked one and struck out six during her no-no. Christine Johnson twice reached base on errors.

Wildcats starter Jessica McDermott surrendered just one hit, but walked 10 in her three-and-two-thirds innings of work. One of the runners she walked scored on a two-run homer in the third, and she walked home two more runs in the fourth and fell to 3-2 on the season with the loss. Sarah Marcia pitched effectively in relief, allowing just one hit in two-and-a-third innings.

The teams will complete their four-game series with a doubleheader Monday morning at 9.
