CHICO, Calif. – Coming off back-to-back CCAA series wins, Chico State softball faced adversity Thursday, dropping both games of its doubleheader against San Francisco State to open the series.
The Wildcats were outscored 12-3 across the two contests, struggling to slow the Gators' offense in Game One and leaving opportunities on the bases in Game Two. Chico State moves to 14-16 overall and 8-10 in CCAA play, slipping to fourth in the conference standings.
Game 1: Chico State 2, SF State 11
Amelie Valdez was tagged with the loss in the series opener as defensive miscues proved costly. The Wildcats committed three errors, which contributed to multiple Gators runs.
Kennedy Gustin and Brianna Swihart accounted for Chico State's two RBIs, with Gustin also recording a multi-hit performance out of the leadoff spot. Swihart extended her hitting streak to 11 games with a single to center field in the fifth inning.
Kylie Loertscher entered in relief, pitching 3.1 innings and striking out two in her eighth appearance of the season.
Game 2: Chico State 0, SF State 1
The Wildcats were unable to capitalize offensively in the second game, leaving nine runners on base and stranding the bases loaded twice in a narrow 1-0 loss.
Bella Tavares turned in a strong complete-game effort in the circle, recording four strikeouts and keeping Chico State within reach throughout.
Brianna Swihart recorded the Wildcats' only multi-hit performance, extending her hitting streak to 12 games. Kennedy Gustin, Itzell De Los Rios, Hannah Levy, Mia Santos and Ali Lewis each added a hit, with Santos collecting a base hit in her first at-bat of the season.
Chico State will host San Francisco State for the second half of the CCAA series Friday, with first pitch scheduled for noon at Wildcat Softball Field.
