CHICO, Calif. – Chico State softball earned a key win Friday, bouncing back in the second game to secure a split with San Francisco State and avoid a series sweep at home. Strong offensive outings from Aiyana Curry, Ali Lewis and Hannah Levy gave the 'Cats a spark, stealing the final game of the week.
With the win, the Wildcats move to 15-17 overall and 9-11 in CCAA play, sitting in fourth place in the conference standings. The Wildcats have three more conference weekends before the CCAA tournament kicks off in May.
Game 1: Chico State 5, SF State 9
The Gators jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning, but Chico State responded immediately with a four-run frame.
Aiyana Curry delivered the big hit, clearing the bases with a three-RBI double down the right-field line in her first at-bat of the day. Hannah Levy added two RBIs to round out the Wildcats' scoring in the inning.
Despite the early momentum, Chico State was unable to contain San Francisco State's offense, as the Gators plated seven runs to take control of the game. A late Wildcats rally in the final inning produced one run but fell short.
Amelie Valdez and Bella Tavares combined for six strikeouts in the circle.
Game 2: Chico State 6, SF State 4
Bella Tavares led the Wildcats in the series finale, earning her fifth win of the season with a complete-game performance. The senior recorded four strikeouts and issued just one walk.
Aiyana Curry stayed hot at the plate, putting Chico State on the board early with a double down the left-field line. The Wildcats extended their lead when Ali Lewis singled to left-center field, driving in Mia Santos and Kennedy Gustin to make it 3-0.
The Gators battled back to cut into the deficit, but RBIs from Bella Tavares and Kennedy Gustin, along with a sacrifice fly from Kara Valencia, helped Chico State maintain control and secure the win.
Curry and Lewis powered the offense, each recording three hits in Game Two. Curry finished the day 6-for-7, while Lewis went 4-for-6, combining for six RBIs in Friday's doubleheader.
