Valdez Secures Series-Opening Win as Wildcats Split Friday with Warriors

CHICO, Calif. – Chico State softball continued its push in the CCAA standings with a split against Stanislaus State on Friday, opening the series with a late-game win before dropping the second contest.

With the split, the Wildcats remain tied with CSUSB in the conference standings at 6-8 in CCAA play.

Game 1: Chico State 4, Stanislaus State 1

After six scoreless innings, both teams broke through in the seventh, but it was Chico State that capitalized with a four-run frame to secure the win.

Brianna Swihart, Hannah Levy, Itzell De Los Rios and Aiyana Curry each drove in runs during the decisive inning.

Amelie Valdez earned her seventh win of the season with a complete-game performance, striking out seven and allowing just one run. The senior threw more than 120 pitches in a gritty outing to secure the series-opening victory.

Game 2: Chico State 1, Stanislaus State 3

Defensive struggles proved costly for the Wildcats in the second game, as five errors led to three unearned runs for the Warriors.

Chico State struck first in the third inning, with Brianna Swihart driving in the Wildcats' lone run. However, a fourth inning that included multiple errors allowed Stanislaus State to take control of the game.

Bella Tavares turned in a strong performance in the circle despite the loss, striking out seven without issuing a walk in a complete-game effort.

Five different Wildcats recorded hits, as Chico State looks to bounce back in the series finale.

Chico State will close out the series Saturday at Wildcat Softball Field, with first pitch scheduled for noon
