SEASIDE, Calif. - Evan Armstrong drove home the winning goal in the 105th minute of play to lift the Chico State men's soccer team to a thrilling road victory at Cal State Monterey Bay Sunday afternoon. The Wildcats improved to 8-1-0 and helped them retain a one-point lead atop the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) standings with a 4-1-0 record.
Ryan Nevarez set the game-winner in motion for the Wildcats. In the midst of a counter-attack, Nevarez served a driving ball into the box that Kevin Gibson flicked on with his head to Armstrong, who was waiting at the back post to knock it home.
Cal State Monterey Bay fell to 1-5-3 overall and 1-3-2 in the CCAA with the loss.
Benjamin Moukoko staked Chico State to a 1-0 lead in the 53rd minute when Armstrong's cross buzzed over the goalkeeper and to Moukoko, who touched it into an open net for his fifth goal of the season.
Cal State Monterey Bay got the equalizer in the 62nd minute off the foot of Nick McGill, eventually forcing overtime.
Chico State outshot its hosts 14-6 and had a 7-3 advantage in shots on goal. Wildcats goalkeeper Michael Keohane made a pair of saves in the first half.
The Wildcats are back in action Wednesday when they host Cal State Stanislaus in the first match of a men's/women's doubleheader at 4:30.
