CHICO - It was a game of “Just wait…It will come” when the Chico State men’s soccer team met up with Humboldt State today in the CCAA opener for both teams. The Wildcats made several impressive scoring attempts in the first half, forcing the Lumberjack to make six exciting saves, but no reward would come for the Wildcats in the period. It wasn’t until ten minutes into the second half that the Wildcats connected with a goal and later added another for a 2-0 win.
The Wildcats, who keep their record perfect at 4-0 overall and 1-0 in CCAA play, finally broke through in the 55th minute. Adam Raish served up a perfect ball from 20 yards out on the right side that found the head of Zac Crim at the far post, who put it in the top left shelf of the Lumberjacks’ goal for his team-high fourth score of the season.
The goal kept Crim’s streak alive – He has either scored or assisted on all four of the Wildcats’ game-winning goals this season.
Chico’s second goal nine minutes later looked very familiar. A similar cross from Raish caused both Crim and the Humboldt goalie to go up after the ball, which deflected off Crim and was slammed home by Ryan Sturckmeyer for his first goal of the season.
The Wildcats outshot the ‘Jacks, who now stand at 2-1-1 and 0-1 in conference play, 25-13 in the match. Michael Keohane made four saves to record his second shutout of the season.
Conference play continues for the Wildcats when they host Cal Poly Pomona next Friday at 7 p.m. and Cal Sate San Bernardino on Sunday at 2:00.
