Because of a slew of injuries, Jason Intravaia, his teammates, and his coaches have been limited to simply wondering what kind of difference he could make on race day. They discovered the answer in the Wildcats' season-opening race Saturday. And it was good news. It was very good news.
Now completely healthy and with a good run of training behind him, Intravaia proved that he can be a difference maker at Saturday's Capital Cross Challenge, finishing eighth overall and fifth among collegians to help lead the Wildcats to victory and earn Wildcat of the Week honors.
The senior transfer from Chabot Community College, now in his third year with the Wildcats, covered the eight-kilometer course at the Haggin Oaks Golf Complex in 24:27.3. He was the second Wildcat and second Division II athlete to cross the finish line in a 26-team field that included a dozen Division I teams.
The Wildcats finished with 42 points to runner-up Pepperdine's 105. Their closest Division II competitor, Cal Poly Pomona, finished fifth with 162 points.
Saturday's performance wasn't exactly shocking. Intravaia enjoyed a strong fall season on the track, establishing a number of personal records. But this marks the first time he's poised to contribute in cross country. It looks like his contribution could be crucial.
Intravaia and the Wildcats will be back in action on Saturday, Oct. 13, at the Santa Clara Bronco Invitational at Baylands Park in Sunnyvale.
