Since joining the Chico State baseball team in 2022, pitcher Cody Gentry has done nothing but win. The lefthander tied for the team lead with seven victories in 2022, and 16 games into the 2023 campaign, Gentry has already notched three hashmarks in the “W” column. His latest trip to the mound qualifies as arguably his best-ever as a Wildcat, holding a talented Cal Poly Pomona team to just two hits as the ’Cats posted a 5-2 win to complete a sweep of the rain-shortened three-game series at Nettleton Stadium. Gentry’s mastery over the visiting Broncos makes him the latest Wildcat of the Week.
In his five-inning start Saturday, Gentry held Cal Poly Pomona hitless through the first four frames, eventually finishing the game allowing just one earned run while striking out three. With the Wildcats racing out to an early 4-0 lead, relievers Marco Ibarra and Josh Verdon came on to nail down the 5-2 victory and the series sweep, raising Chico State’s season record to 10-6 and vaulting the ’Cats into third place in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) standings.
Gentry, who now owns a career 10-3 record as a Wildcat, has put up some impressive numbers during the first month-and-a-half of the 2023 season. He is currently tied for third among all CCAA pitchers in wins, and ranks third in the conference in both earned run average (a team-best 1.80) and opponent batting average (.189).
Gentry and the Wildcats hit the road this weekend, traveling to Rohnert Park to go head-to-head with the Sonoma State Seawolves. The four-game series begins with a single game Friday afternoon, followed by a Saturday doubleheader and a single game slated for Sunday.
