Just starting her third season of competition as a member of the Chico State women’s track & field team, Ava Cavallaro has been a model of consistency among the Wildcats’ many talented throwers. Based on her outstanding performance at the Wildcat Invitational, the 2023 campaign is already shaping up to be a banner year for the Tracy native. Cavallaro finished first in the hammer, shot put, and discus during the two-day meet, and in the process posted a pair of season-best marks. Her domination of the weekend’s throwing events makes Cavallaro the latest Wildcat of the Week.
Â
Cavallaro set a successful tone Friday afternoon in the hammer throw. Under sunny skies—the only decent weather of the entire Wildcat Invitational—she took top honors by unleashing a throw of 45.23 meters, notching a personal season-best mark in the event.

Saturday Cavallaro was forced to compete in the midst of a steady rainfall that loomed over Chico’s University Stadium throughout most of the afternoon. She shook off the wet conditions to post two more first place finishes, delivering a season-best throw of 34.50 meters in the discus, followed by a meet-best toss of 11.27 meters in the shot put.
Â
Only two meets into the 2023 season, Cavallaro already owns the eighth-best hammer throw distance (45.23 meters) in all of Division II, and is ranked in the top 30 nationwide in the shot put (11.44 meters).
