STOCKTON, Calif. – The Chico State women's golf team opened play at the CCAA Championships at The Reserve at Spanos on Monday, carding a team score of 330 (+42) to sit fifth after the first round of the 54-hole, three-day event.
The Wildcats navigated challenging pin locations throughout the day, emphasizing adjustments in course management heading into round two. Head coach Heather Fegley-Birchmier noted the team will look to play more strategically on approach shots to create better scoring opportunities.
Freshman Gabriella Fanucchi led Chico State with an 81 (+9) and sits in 18th place. After opening her round with back-to-back bogeys, Fanucchi settled in and closed her front nine with a strong 39. She found success with her iron play, hitting 11 greens in regulation, which allowed her to stay competitive throughout the round. Looking ahead, Fanucchi noted she'll focus on improving her tee shots to put herself in better position off the tee and create more scoring opportunities.
Sophomore Hollyn Drennen turned in an 82 (+10) and is tied for 19th, highlighted by steady play down the stretch where she went 2-over across her final eight holes. Drennen also excelled on the par 5s, playing them at even par to rank tied for fifth in the field. Alongside her, junior Lillian Crays posted an 83 (+11) and is tied for 21st.
"Today we saw Hollyn and Lillian step up when others were struggling," Fegley-Biirchmier added. "They managed their games well and kept their emotions low. They were able to hold their rounds together even with their putting not being the best."
Senior Brooke Pelletier carded an 84 (+12) to sit tied for 23rd, while freshman Sienna Garcia rounded out the Wildcats' lineup with an 86 (+14), placing 25th.
Chico State tees off at 8AM in Tuesday's second round as they continue play at The Reserve at Spanos.
