Pelletier, Garcia Lead Wildcats in Opening Round

| By:

Alameda, Calif. – The Chico State women's golf team opened its spring season Monday at the Tim Tierney Pioneer Shootout, hosted by Cal State East Bay. After the first round of 18 holes, the Wildcats sit in a tie for 16th place in the 19-team field. The team posted a score of 318 in round one.

Freshman Sienna Garcia turned in an impressive performance, carding a 5-over par 77 (36-41), marking the lowest round of her collegiate career. Garcia credited her success to her performance on the greens and carding only 30 putts. When asked about the course conditions, Garcia emphasized the importance of precise approach shots and properly positioning the ball on the sloped greens, noting that being on the correct tiers was crucial.

Senior Brooke Pelletier led the Wildcats with a 4-over par 76. Pelletier was steady on the front nine, recording nine consecutive pars for an even-par 36 before finishing with a 40 on the back nine. "Putting myself in good positions off the tee was a point of emphasis and allowed me to attack pins," Pelletier said.

Junior Ariana Blagrove added an 82 (+10), while junior Lillian Crays shot an 83 (+11). Sophomore Sophia Magaña rounded out the Wildcats' scoring with an 84 (+12).

Chico State will return to action Tuesday morning for the second and final round, with play beginning at 7:30 a.m. Rain is forecasted to move in toward the end of the round as the Wildcats look to climb the leaderboard and close out the tournament strong.
