A Handful of 'Cats Make the Podium at Kim Duyst invitational

TURLOCK, Calif. – The Chico State men's track & field team saw several members come close to achieving NCAA provisional stamps but saw plenty of podium finishes by the end of the two-day Kim Duyst Invitational hosted by Stanislaus State.
 
Chance Hefter ended up making the podium twice, winning the shot put with a distance of 16.31 meters and taking second in the discus throw at 45.42 meters. He came up 0.28 meters short in the shot put from setting his first provisional mark of the season. Beau Gleeson also made the podium in the discus throw with his reach of 44.67 meters.
 
Chico State swept the podium in the men's pole vault event. Justin Craven threw for 4.65 meters to take first and was followed by Jose Sandoval and Jordan Ausbie, who each had 4.50 meter results.
 
The 4x400-meter relay team also came up victorious in the event as Brody Staley, Quincy Patton, Vincent Rinaldi and Trey Suffredini combined for a time of 3:17.66 for the win.
 
Tad Desambrana also had a day in which he made it to the stage celebrating a third-place finish in the hammer throw with a distance of 52.83 meters. Giovanni Larrea was the top four-year university participant in the long jump, going as far as 6.94 meters.
 
Alex Valcarenghi led the effort for the Wildcats in the high jump, taking third in the event with a reach of 1.90 meters.
 
The 4x100-meter relay team of Willshawn Rusthon-Grisby, Rinaldi, Staley and CJ Smith took third place in the event in 41.36 seconds, missing the provisional mark by 0.56 seconds.
 
Donovan Marshall also came close to a provisional mark in the 110-meter hurdles, clocking in at 15.09 for third place. Marshall and teammate Nathan Witte finished second and third, respectively, with a gap of 0.51 seconds between the two. Marshall's second-place time was 55.34.
 
Another sweeping moment was in the 400-meter. Staley won the event in 48.57 seconds and was followed by Suffredini (49.19) and Rinaldi (49.38).
 
Chico State returns to campus to entertain opponents in its Wildcat Invitational next weekend. The meet will be two days of festivities beginning Friday.
