Five-run inning hurts ‘Cats in series finale with Otters

Chico State swept at Cal State Monterey Bay, now turns focus on San Francisco State Tuesday-Wednesday

SEASIDE – The Chico State baseball team got a four-run lead after three innings, but Cal State Monterey Bay responded and scored five runs in the fourth inning that proved to be the difference in the series finale Saturday afternoon as the Otters took an 8-4 result to complete the four-game sweep over the 'Cats.

The Wildcats fall to 15-14 overall and 9-10 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.

While the 'Cats will gladly put the series with the Otters behind them, they have another short turnaround as they will drive up the 101 Freeway to the Bay Area to play San Francisco State, making up two of the games that was missed due to rain in March. The series begins Tuesday at 3 p.m. Wednesday's game starts at noon.

Without the service of Jeffrey Ray in the series, head coach Dave Taylor went with Andrew Crane in the leadoff spot. It appeared to have worked as the right fielder opened the game with a double to left center. He took third on a wild pitch and scored on Jacob Jablonski's two-out single to left.

Two innings later, the 'Cats quickly went to work and got three runs on three hits. Ernie Arambula led off with a single, Logan Drummond tripled to right center and Jeremy Keller homered down the left field line to make it 4-0 Chico.

Despite giving up a run in the first inning, Dylan Day pitched out of an error in the second and a single in the third, he got put into trouble with the five-run fourth inning. He got the first out, but a double followed by a single scored in the first run. The Otters hit into a ground out for out number two and then capitalized on a RBI single, a catcher's interference and a three-run home run to take a 6-4 lead.

Chico State's best opportunity to rally came in the eighth inning. Pinch-hitter Hunter James Boylan led off with a walk and Kaden Bass followed with a base hit and stole second to put two runners into scoring position with nobody out. Monterey Bay's Nico Hartojo managed to get out of the threat by getting the next two batters on two strikeouts and groundout.

The Wildcats ended the day with nine hits, the Otters had 13.
