SAN FRANCISCO – The Chico State baseball team collected hits but couldn't produce runs to keep up with San Francisco State's slugfest Tuesday as the Gators chomped on the Wildcats 9-0 to open the makeup series from a rainout last month at Maloney Field.
The Wildcats fall to .500 at 15-15 and drop to 9-11 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. The Gators, meanwhile, improve to 20-12 overall and 13-11 in the conference.
Chico State did record nine hits, but all were singles. SF State had 14 hits with four stretched for extra bases.
The Wildcats had a promising start to the game with runners at the corners to start the game going up against Gator starter Radanovich, but the right-hander got out of the two-out jam with a grounder back to him.
SF State did all the scoring it needed to win the game in the first inning. Going up against Logan Meyers, who started off the bullpen session for the 'Cats, leadoff hitter Sammy Gonzales led off with a double and scored on Nick Upstill's RBI single.
Chico State's other best opportunity to get on the board came in the fourth inning. Kyle Dobson reached on a fielder's choice and back-to-back singles by Jeremy Keller and Ernie Arambula loaded the bases with one out. Radanovich got the next two batters on a bunt popout and a flyout to right.
SF State got one run in the second and seven runs between the fifth, sixth and seventh innings.
The two sides continue their makeup series Wednesday at noon.
