SAN FRANCISCO – Cameron Mahaffy hit a two-run home run in the seventh inning, but it wasn't enough to overcome two unearned runs scored as the Chico State baseball team fell 3-2 to San Francisco State in game two of the makeup series Wednesday.
The 'Cats, still in search for a win in the last six games, drop their overall record to 15-16 and 9-12 in the CCAA. The Gators bump their overall record to 21-12 and climb the CCAA standings at 14-11.
Much like Tuesday opener, Chico State had another promising start. Logan Drummond, who moved to the leadoff spot for the second time in a week, opened the game with a base hit and Jacob Jablonski, taking the No. 2 slot also for the second time, drew a walk against Gator starter Tyler Franks. The right-hander would eventually retire the side and held the Wildcats without a hit or a walk the rest of his five-inning outing.
Justin Tamelier threw two shutout innings until the Gators got through to him in the third. He got the first two batters to start the third but allowed two runners on to setup Nick Upstill, who entered the day as the CCAA batting average leader, slugged in two runs with a double to right field.
The difference in the game came in the sixth inning. With two down and the bases loaded, a passed ball allowed the eventual winning run across. Tamelier would end the day going six innings allowing one earned run on five hits and two walks.
Josh Verdon came out of bullpen and threw two shutout innings giving up three hits and striking out three.
With the scheduled bye weekend coming up, the 'Cats will return to Maloney Field in a week to play the 9/7-inning doubleheader at noon. Before that, SF State will head to Stanislaus State for its scheduled four-game series this weekend.
