LOS ANGELES—Following three consecutive one-run games in its four-game series at Cal State LA, the Chico State baseball team returned to the formula it's employed for most of the season on Sunday: smashing the competition. Grady Morgan, Willie Lajoie, and Zach Morris drove in three runs apiece as the Wildcats ripped Cal State LA 14-2, taking three of four in the series in the process.
Braeden Gowdy (6-0) gave the Wildcats five strong innings, allowing only two runs, and Josh Verdon, Gerrit Erickson, and Cayden Castellanos combined for four shutout innings in relief as the Wildcats improved to 25-7 overall and 18-5 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association, maintaining a half-game lead over Cal State Monterey Bay for first place.
Lajoie drove in runs in the first and fourth, and Morris smashed a two-run double in the third and RBI single in the fourth as the Wildcats built a 6-0 advantage. Cal State LA showed signs of life in the bottom of the fourth, scoring a pair of runs, before the Wildcats put the game away with a five-run fifth. Lajoie drove in the second run of the inning with an RBI single ahead of Morgan, who smoked a three-run homer to right.
Morgan went 3-for-4 Sunday and wrapped up the four-game series 12-for-18. The sophomore has now hit safely in 13 consecutive games while raising his season batting average to .413. The home run was his third of the season.
The 14
th-ranked Wildcats will be back home next weekend to host Cal State Dominguez Hills (19-11, 14-6) for a four-game series beginning Friday at 6 p.m. Admission to Friday's game is free. Chico State's 2021-22 West Region Champion men's cross country and men's basketball teams will be honored prior to the game. The series will continue with a doubleheader Sunday at noon before concluding with a single game Sunday at 11 a.m.
That series marks the start of a stretch during which the Wildcats will play the three teams trailing most closely to them in the conference standings. After this weekend (the third place Toros are 3.5 games behind Chico State), the Wildcats will visit Cal State San Bernardino (3.5 games back) April 14-16, before returning home to host Cal State Monterey Bay (0.5 games back) April 29–May 1. After that series, the Wildcats will wrap up the regular season with a four-game set at Cal State East Bay May 5-7.
