TURLOCK—Another day, two more double-digit run totals. The Chico State baseball team has officially taken its whooping sticks on the road. The Wildcats twice rallied from behind to beat host Stanislaus State 15-7 and 13-5 Saturday at Warrior Field, and have now taken each of the first three games of the series, cementing their first road series win of 2022.
Now 18-5 overall and 11-3 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), Chico State has reached double digits in runs scored 13 times in its first 23 games. Thirteen matches their most double-digit run totals over the course of an entire season since the NCAA BBCOR bat era began in 2011.
The Wildcats trailed 7-2 in the opener before scoring nine runs in the sixth and four more in the seventh to completely turn the tide. A two-run double off the bat of Zach Morris and Jack Murphy's two-out, two-run single were the big blows in the sixth. Elijah Jackson's bases-clearing double in the seventh blew the game wide open.
Jeffrey Ray and Jarret Lindsay also drove in two runs apiece, while Jackson and Andrew Crane cashed in three runs each.
Josh Verdon (2-0) earned the win with three-and-a-third innings of scoreless relief, scattering three hits without issuing a walk, and striking out one. Gerrit Erickson retired the Warriors in order in the ninth. Starter Cody Gentry surrendered eight hits and seven runs, only one of which was earned, in his four-and-two-thirds frames.
The Wildcats trailed 3-0 in the nightcap before scoring six times in the fifth and then tacking on seven insurance runs in the seventh. Consecutive RBI singles off the bats of Ray, Murphy, and Willie Lajoie tied the game at 3-3 before Kyle Dobson drilled a bases-clearing double to left-center to put Chico State ahead to stay.
Stanislaus State responded with two runs in the bottom-half of the inning and the Wildcats were nursing a one-run lead before blowing the game open in the seventh. Crane's two-out, two-run single was the big hit of the inning. Murphy, Lajoie, and Dobson had two hits apiece.
Kevin Lyons (2-0) earned the win in relief while Eric Hill earned his second save with two-and-a-third innings of scoreless relief.
The series finale, originally scheduled for noon, will now start Sunday at 1 p.m.
