Relentless Wildcats Wrap up 4-Game Sweep with 17-8 Win

Chico State slams three home runs while taking over sole possession of first place

TURLOCK—The Chico State baseball team and its relentless lineup wrapped up four-game road sweep of Stanislaus State with a 17-8 victory Sunday afternoon. The Wildcats scored a combined 65 runs during the sweep and came from behind to win the last three games.

Chico State improved to 19-5 overall and rose into sole possession of first place in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) standings at 12-3. Cal State Monterey Bay and Cal State Dominguez Hills are tied for second at 11-5.

The 26th-ranked Wildcats scored in seven of nine innings Sunday but trailed 8-6 heading to the fifth. That's when they did what they did all series, and what they've done for much of the season: they started putting up crooked numbers. The Wildcats scored four in the fifth to take an 8-6 lead, tacked on four more in the seventh to stretch the advantage to 14-6, and then added three more runs in the eighth.

Jeffrey Ray, Willie Lajoie, and Jacob Jablonski all homered for the Wildcats, who have now scored in double digits in seven of their past nine games and 14 of 24 this season. Jack Murphy went 4-for-5 with two doubles, three RBI, and four runs scored. Lajoie also drove in three runs, while Jablonski and Ernie Arambula drove in two apiece. Jablonski and Elija Jackson had three hits apiece.

Kevin Lyons earned the win in relief, surrendering just one run on three hits in five fabulous frames, while improving to 2-0. Tyler Chivens retired the final five batters, striking out three.

The Wildcats return home to host Cal State San Marcos for a four-game series next weekend, beginning with a single game Friday at 6 p.m., continuing with a doubleheader Saturday at noon, and wrapping up with a single game Sunday at 11 a.m.
